The MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System is the world's first system that
integrates an insulin pump with REAL-Time continuous glucose monitoring.
The first part of the system is the MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time 522 or 722
insulin pump, built on the MiniMed Paradigm platform with all the features you
expect from a "smart" insulin pump. Insulin pump therapy, with or without
continuous glucose monitoring, gives you:
- Freedom from multiple daily injections
- Freedom to eat, sleep, and exercise when you want
- Better glucose control with less risk of going low
The second part of the system is the optional REAL-Time Continuous Glucose
Monitoring component, which offers REAL-Time glucose readings, safety alarms,
and glucose trend data.
Easy to Wear, Easy to Use
Part of the #1 prescribed MiniMed Paradigm family of insulin pumps, the
MiniMed Paradigm 522 or 722 insulin pump is
small so you can wear it almost anywhere – under your clothing in a leg pouch,
thigh pouch, bra pouch, or on your belt like a cell phone. It delivers insulin
through a soft tube called a cannula that
sits under your skin for up to 3 days after being inserted in one virtually
painless step. You can disconnect from the insulin pump easily and quickly for
activities such as bathing, swimming, or changing clothes.
Continuous glucose monitoring is made possible through a tiny sensor you
wear for up to three days at a time. Like the cannula, it is easily inserted
using an automatic insertion device provided with the system. Sensor data is
sent continuously to a transmitter, a
small lightweight device that attaches to your skin with a small, simple,
adhesive patch. The sensor, transmitter, and adhesive patch are all waterproof.
The transmitter sends the data to the insulin pump through advanced radio
frequency (RF) wireless technology.
REAL-Time Continuous Glucose Monitoring Lets You Enjoy REAL Control with
REAL Confidence
REAL-Time Readings help you take action sooner to improve control of your
glucose levels and reduce the risk of long-term health complications. The
MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System takes measurements continuously and displays
updated glucose values every five minutes to help you take the right action at
the right time to improve control of your diabetes. Fingerstick measurements
using a standard blood glucose meter are still required before making therapy
adjustments, and to calibrate the system.
REAL-Time Alarms warn you of low and high glucose levels that fingersticks and
A1C testing may miss. You
can preset alarms to sound or vibrate. You can even customize the setting to
just the right sensitivity for you.
REAL-Time Trend Arrows point up or down to clearly show you the direction and
rate of change in your glucose. Because even brief fluctuations can increase
your risk of long-term problems, this information helps you reduce the risk of
long-term complications such as eye, nerve, heart, and kidney disease.
REAL-Time Trend Graphs show you the effect of meals, exercise, insulin, and
medication on control of your glucose levels. Additionally, you can upload
historical data from the insulin pump to CareLink®
Online, where you can generate longer-term charts, graphs, and tables for your
records or to share with your health care providers.
Who Can Use the MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System?
- The insulin pump is indicated for adults and children with type 1 and type
2 diabetes who require insulin.
- The REAL-Time glucose monitoring component is indicated for adults, age 18
and over, with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Choose the Components You Need
The MiniMed Paradigm 522 or 722 insulin pump can be purchased and used on its
own. The REAL-Time continuous glucose monitoring kit is sold separately as a
cash pay item (not covered by most insurance plans). Although the kit is not
available until summer 2006, you can get started now through the Step It Up Program.
